El MIT y la Universidad de Harvard anuncian edX

El Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) y la Harvard University han anunciado una iniciativa conjunta, llamada edX, para la difusión de sus cursos masivos online por Internet. El proyecto engloba la anterior iniciativa MITx y tiene como objetivos, además de ofrecer cursos online, el desarrollo de una plataforma tecnologica open source que sirve de base al modelo y servir como laboratorio en la investigación sobre los procesos de aprendizaje y la influencia de la tecnologia en ellos.

(...) An organization established by MIT and Harvard that will develop an open-source technology platform to deliver online courses. EdX will support Harvard and MIT faculty in conducting research on teaching and learning on campus through tools that enrich classroom and laboratory experiences. At the same time, edX also will reach learners around the world through online course materials. The edX website will begin by hosting MITx and Harvardx content, with the goal of adding content from other universities interested in joining the platform. edX will also support the Harvard and MIT faculty in conducting research on teaching and learning.

El anuncio, que se puede interpretar como una respuesta a la reciente ampiación de la oferta del portal Cousera, parece indicar un proceso de concentración y consolidación de los MOOC (Massive open online course) entre las grandes Universidades de los EUA.

El portal web Coursera, que ofrece cursos masivos gratuitos a través de Internet, ha anunciado un importante aumento de su oferta mediante una asociación con diversas universidades. Además de la Stanford University , de donde provienen sus fundadores, se han asociado la University of Michigan, la University of Pennsylvania i Princeton University de manera formal; otras como la University of California, Berkeley participan de manera experimental. El sistema se basa en el uso de videoclases y la evalucion y ayuda entre el propio alumnado.

(...), the Coursera system breaks lectures into segments as short as 10 minutes and offers quick online quizzes as part of each segment.

Where essays are required, especially in the humanities and social sciences, the system relies on the students themselves to grade their fellow students’ work, in effect turning them into teaching assistants. (...)

The Coursera system also offers an online feature that allows students to get support from a global student community. (...)

Esta operación se enmarca en el creciente interés por los cursos masivos online en el mundo universitario de los EUA que esta generando numerosas iniciativas similares como MITx (de la que hemos hablado anteriormente), Udacity, Minerva, The Faculty Project ...

El prototipo de curso de la iniciativa MITx abre la inscripción

El proyecto MITx del MIT, del que hemos hablado anteriormente, anuncia que abre la inscripción de su primer curso : 6.002x (Circuits and Electronics) que tiene el carácter de prototipo experimental. En virtud de este carácter la certificación sera gratuita

At the end of the prototype course, students who demonstrate their mastery will be able to receive a certificate of completion for free. In future MITx courses, students who complete the mastery requirement on MITx will be able to receive the credential for a modest fee.

Además de proyectos instucionales como este una serie de nuevas iniciativas estan empezando a ofrecer cursos on-line gratuitos en Internet. La mayor parte son start-ups provenientes del mundo universitario y, aunque varían en sus condiciones, ofrecen materiales e inscripción gratuita al menos. Entre ellas podemos citar: Udacity, Coursera, The Faculty Project o GoodSemester
